Resources on Flexible Product Driven IT Systems for the Insurance Industry

Building flexible insurance systems that allow short product release cycles is a challenge for many insurance firms. Despite the huge market and the many projects that do near identical things these projects are still a little bit like black magic. There’s virtually no literature around on the topic. This paper provides a collection of patterns that help explain the basic forces and solutions for the design of product driven insurance systems.

This paper is 7 years old now in 2005 but still actual in a way that most systems are still older, have not been renovated and many will still have to use these patterns

Background material for a Tutorial at STJA99

Abstract: As people find out that object-orientation and rapid development alone are often not fast enough in order to adapt software to changing environments and ever changing business processes they turn to meta-systems and try to define business rules in a declarative way. This paper discusses an array of typical design flaws and problems in such systems in order to help you avoid the pitfalls described. Most of the pitfalls described in this paper also contain possible ways to refactor a system once you have identified the problem.

Das Management der Anwendungslandschaft großer Versicherer steht im Spannungsfeld zwischen absoluter Homogenität der Anwendungsarchitekturen und dem Einsatz heterogener Anwendungslandschaften. Während homogene Ansätze vordergründig Kostenvorteile durch einen hohen Reuse-Faktor versprechen bieten heterogene Ansätze die Möglichkeit Angebote vieler Hersteller zu nutzen und so oft kostengünstig „einzukaufen“ zu können. Durch die anhaltenden Konzentrations- und Umorganisationsprozesse in der Branche ist Homogenität aber auch immer schwerer durchzuhalten und das Beherrschen von Heterogenität kann zum Erfolgsfaktor werden. Ansätze wie Componentware oder CORBA sind weniger ausschlaggebend für den Erfolg, als die konsequente Anwendung der fachlichen Gliederungen und Modelle, wie sie zum Beispiel auch in der VAA enthalten sind.

Mit diesem Dokument legt der AK-VAA ein einheitliches Handbuch zur Spezifikationsmethodik für die fachlichen Anwendungsbausteine von VAA vor. Spezifikationen bestehen aus fachlichen Übersichtsteilen und eher formalen Modellen, die mit der sog. Sachbearbeitermethode spezifiziert werden.
